On Tuesday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration put down strict limits on the amount of lead that can be found in processed baby food. These restrictions could cut exposure to the pollutant by as much as 27%. The new draught of guidelines from the health regulator pertains to packaged foods made for infants and young children under the age of two.
The FDA stated that although it is not possible to completely remove these components from the food supply, we anticipate that manufacturers will apply agricultural and processing procedures to minimize lead levels in response to the suggested action levels.
Particularly in young children, prolonged exposure to high amounts of lead can result in brain damage and other issues. According to the FDA, the revised limitations might reduce lead exposure from processed infant meals by 24–27%.
